Sylvia G. Borda

Borda is an active practicing artist, producing artworks that employ new media and analog technologies like video projection, digital and photo print media. Her work typically involves reworking cultural symbols to create hybridized objects or images from historical sources.

Borda takes historic visual components (concepts, compositions, etc) which become the foundation of her own aesthetic vocabulary. The resulting works are constructs that reflect past vocabularies held in juxtaposition with contemporary values. Her works cause audiences to do double takes. The resulting images appear familiar but the messages associated with them are often unfamiliar.

Borda is currently an Associate Researcher and Lecturer in Digital Arts in the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia and at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, where she is presently studying how cognitive responses evolve over time in relation to media stimuli. Her research interests lie in the examination of popular culture and the emergence of convergent user interface systems. Among other academic responsibilities, she manages ontherundesign.com, a partnership of new media curators and international artists addressing emerging definitions of Net Art.
